Teosinte

The word teosinte (Zea perennis, first attested in English 1877, in Spanish 1790Haugen 2009, but first as teocintli in 1590) comes from Nahuatl. Eastern Nahuatl has teo:sintli, Western Nahuatl teo:sentli, derived from teo:- "deity, divine, of the sun" and sin-/sen- "maize".
