The word mezcal ("agave-based licor" first attested in 1709 Haugen (2009)) comes from Nahuatl <mexcalli> /meʃkal-li/ "roasted agave", which is coined as a compound of me- "agave" + iʃka "roast" + -l "passive" + -li "absolutive suffix".
