Southern Uto-Aztecan words for "Dog" are built on two main roots *tsu "dog" and *tsi "puppy", these re combined with other roots in the individual languages.

- itskʷin < *tsɨkɨi-mɨ < *tsu-kui
- chichi < *tsitsi (or from *tsutsi "puppy-dog")

- tsɨkɨ "dog"
- tsinu "puppy" < *tsi + nu "baby"
